The ladies shared powerful stories about their characters and Alicia spoke about being bitten by the directing bug. “This was my first time directing and I am in love,” she told Robin Roberts. “You’ll see me behind the camera more often.”

The new mom also opened up about her son Egypt, who will turn one this month. “He’s actually Jennifer’s boyfriend,” she joked. “He kissed her and it was kind of tender.”

Five premieres October 10 on Lifetime.

In a Glamour exclusive, Jennifer Aniston, Demi Moore and Alicia Keys talk about the crucial women’s health crusade that brought them together (oh, and husbands, boyfriends and babies, too!).

What do the superstars you see here have in common—besides their megawatt status and constant pursuit by paparazzi? A message they’re sharing for the first time, here in these pages. This month the three friends team up to help launch the women’s advocacy project of the year: Five, a series of films about women and breast cancer that, stitched together in a two-hour block airing on Lifetime on October 10, powerfully show how breast cancer affects women’s lives, families and friendships. Each of our cover girls directed a film; stars of the pieces include some of Hollywood’s strongest actresses, like Patricia Clarkson, Jeanne Tripplehorn and Rosario Dawson. Ready to hear more? Let Aniston, Moore and Keys tell you why they got involved—and what else is going on in their jam-packed, bold-faced lives.

Jennifer Aniston
Aniston, an executive producer and a major force behind Five, directed Mia, a film about a woman who initially—and wrongly—thinks her diagnosis is a death sentence. She sat down to talk with her friend and fellow executive producer Kristin Hahn.

KRISTIN HAHN: Take us through how Five came to be.

JENNIFER ANISTON: Well, about a year ago, Susan G. Komen for the Cure approached you and me with the idea. We were intrigued by the challenge of creating short stories that would defy audiences’ expectation of the subject. We wanted to balance the drama with humor and irreverence because that’s what’s helped our friends who’ve faced this get through their treatment. So we approached Francesca Silvestri and Kevin Chinoy, who produce Glamour’s Reel Moments, which is how I came to direct my first short film, one of the best experiences of my life. Then we joined forces with [producer] Paula Wagner and [cocreator of Friends] Marta Kauffman. We wanted stories that were informative without being heavy-handed. Oh, and they needed to be brilliantly written. Other than that, our goals were small. [Both laugh.]

KRISTIN HAHN: Why do we still need to tell stories about breast cancer after 20 years of awareness?

JENNIFER ANISTON: Because we don’t yet have a cure, and cancer has grown 30,000 snakes out of its head. We need to go at this Medusa with all the firepower we’ve got, from research and legislation, to awareness and early detection, to support groups and compassion for everyone who walks through this. We need to show up for them, to talk to them, to not be afraid.

KRISTIN HAHN: You were very active in the Stand Up to Cancer special that Laura Ziskin [producer of films like Spider-man, who lost her battle with breast cancer in June] produced. What do you hope her legacy will be?

JENNIFER ANISTON: Oh my God, what a fighter. Her legacy is in everyone she touched. Everything she was so good at, she funneled into the cancer cause. She is not to be forgotten.

KRISTIN HAHN: What do you want people to walk away with after seeing Five?

JENNIFER ANISTON: We want people to walk away with hope and information but feel incredibly entertained. Cancer affects all of us, whether you’re a daughter, mother, sister, friend, coworker, doctor, patient. These films touch on that reality. The film I directed is called Mia, and it’s about a woman who takes her diagnosis as a death sentence and gives up—only to discover she’s gone into remission. We want people to know it is very possible to conquer breast cancer.

KRISTIN HAHN: But is there something people can learn from Mia’s “live like you’re dying” attitude?

JENNIFER ANISTON: Yes: Don’t wait until life has given you an expiration date to live. When Mia’s given this loud ticking clock, she finally goes out and takes risks and pursues her dreams. Hopefully women out there can do it without a diagnosis.

KRISTIN HAHN: Glamour wants to know: What do you still get giddy about? Describe something that made you “little kid” giddy.

JENNIFER ANISTON: Putting my feet and handprints in cement in front of Grauman’s Chinese Theatre [on the historic Hollywood Walk of Fame]. That got me giddy! It was a milestone in my career, which was surreal because I still think I’m at the beginning of it. I remember when they told me about the honor, I thought, Really? I mean, I just did Ferris Bueller [the TV show]. I just did Leprechaun! I don’t understand! I thought, I just had a year of failures. [Laughs.] I’ve never lost that feeling of “Oh God, I hope I get this job!” I don’t want to get too used to any of this because then entitlement sets in, and that’s the kiss of death.

KRISTIN HAHN: There’s actually been a flurry of honors for you these past months. You received the Decade of Hotness Award from Spike TV, and you referenced the fact that being this side of 40, the award was not lost on you. How is it being this side of 40 in an industry that values youth over everything else?

JENNIFER ANISTON: Being this side of 40 feels like what I should have felt being this side of 25: in my body, in my heart, happy with my life, and OK with whatever bumps in the road present themselves.

KRISTIN HAHN: Knowing what you know now, what advice would you give to yourself at 22?

JENNIFER ANISTON: Honestly, whatever angst-y times I’ve had came after fame, which we both know was after 22. When I was 22, I was having a ball! I would have nothing to say to myself. [Laughs. ] I was living in Laurel Canyon with my best friends, including you, and we were dreaming of creating things like Five.

KRISTIN HAHN: You’re a creature of habit. At one point you got flack for being photographed in the same bikini two years in a row…

JENNIFER ANISTON: …and I’ll wear it for as many years as the strings still tie! Bathing suits now have so much hardware on them that they singe your skin. When you take your bikini off, it looks like you’ve been branded with crop circles and lightning bolts and words like Gucci!

KRISTIN HAHN: People are obsessed with your love life! So here’s a Mad Lib for you to fill in: “I couldn’t be in a relationship without ________________.”

JENNIFER ANISTON: A human being! OK, in all seriousness, I would say I couldn’t be in a relationship without equality, generosity, integrity, spirit, kindness and humor. And awesomeness.

KRISTIN HAHN: There are so many stories about you in the tabloids that are completely false. Is there anything you’d like to set the record straight on for Glamour readers?

JENNIFER ANISTON: There’s not enough space in this article. Not even enough pages in this magazine! The truth is, most celebrities are doing the same things most other people are doing every day…work, have dinner, hang out with your friends when you can, try and keep up with the crazy world we’re living in and squeeze in some zzz’s. There’s not nearly as much stealing and obsessing and middle-of-the-night secret calls to ex-boyfriends and scheming and cheating [as they lead you to believe]. Most of it’s just bulls—t, however entertaining.

JENNIFER Aniston doesn’t need anyone to tell her what to do. The Horrible Bosses star knows who she is and where’s she’s going.

You’d think that the weight of all that’s been written about Aniston would leave her bent double and dragging enough baggage to fill a 747. But what you think and what you get are two completely different things.

The actress may be enjoying her surroundings at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in Manhattan, one of the oldest in New York and the epitome of faded grandeur, but it soon becomes clear that Aniston is all about the future and not the past.

The legendary landmark (the hotel, not Aniston) takes up an entire block south of Central Park, and is known for its famous Waldorf salad and close-up magic shows. So it’s fitting that Aniston, one of the most photographed women on the planet, appears out of nowhere like a designer-clad conjuror’s assistant.

It’s impossible not to be drawn to her energy. Her smile is genuine, her eyes sparkle and her luscious blonde hair bobs gently like driftwood on a lake.

Strikingly, she looks as if she has been dipped in honey. But not just any honey the most expensive, delicious, golden honey in the world. She’s wearing soft grey tones that complement her syrupy hue; a Tom Ford skirt, Calvin Klein bustier and Michael Kors shoes.

Her chunky gold watch glints in the sunlight that is streaming through the huge windows. For a woman who appears to be forever tied to her superstar ex-husband, his equally famous partner and their rainbow brood (if you don’t know who they are, you probably only speak Klingon), Aniston’s supremely confident in herself. But it wasn’t always that way.

“I’m happier with myself now,” says the 42-year-old, before joking: “At the age of 60, I think I’m doing pretty good.”

She laughs, then adds, “I was just so uncomfortable with myself in my twenties, but I’m absolutely more comfortable in my body as I’ve gotten older.”

Does she think that older women, who are sexy and confident, are scary to men? She exclaims, “I think men are intimidated by women of any age!”

And nowhere is that more apparent than in her new comedy, Horrible Bosses, where she plays Dr Julia Harris, an inappropriate sex-hungry dentist. The movie is about three friends, played by Jason Sudeikis, Jason Bateman and Day, who plot to bump off their difficult employers, played by Aniston, Colin Farrell and Kevin Spacey.

Aniston, who is often accused of making so-so movies, is back in comedy form as the foxy dentist who does a nice line in sex-talk. She admits that she jumped at the chance to play the brunette man-eater who sexually harasses Charlie Day’s character, Dale Arbus.

“I don’t want to play it safe all the time,” she says, explaining why she took the role. “But I’ve never had a script come to me that allowed me to go in this direction. It was a great opportunity. And as far as I’m concerned, the raunchier the better.”

She appears on screen in her underwear and it has to be said, she’s never looked better. But she explains that she had to get inside a masculine mindset to play a sexual bully.

“I thought of Dr Julia Harris as a traditional male character, and that’s how I played her. And frankly, that’s what made it so much fun,” she says, adding, “I had to keep apologising to Charlie for everything that had just happened between us. We only really got to know each other in between the straddling.”

But Aniston’s more than up to the challenge of physical comedy. Her workout routine is legendary, and clearly successful as there literally isn’t a wobbly bit on her body. Up close her skin is taut and line free, without a hint of botox or surgery. She mixes cardio with yoga, which she talks about in almost religious tones, revealing that she practices every day.

“It’s very important to me. I love it, and if I don’t do it my spirit wilts. For me, it’s mental as well as physical and spiritual.”

Aniston occupies a very unusual place in the global consciousness. She’s been called “America’s Sweetheart”, and is still linked so closely in the media to her ex-husband, Brad Pitt, that it must be almost impossible to either live up to one, and live down the other. Is this new role a conscious attempt to shake off the labels that are so readily attributed to her?

She laughs, then thinks for a moment before speaking. “I didn’t do this to rid myself of the `America’s Sweetheart’ title. But you know, I don’t know where that came from. And there are so many America’s Sweethearts…,” she says, faltering. “I took the role because I loved it, and thought it would be a fun challenge. The America’s Sweetheart thing, that’s a label. You’re branded and there’s always going to be something attached to you. That’s just the way it is.”

If she sounds sanguine about her public persona, it’s only because fame and fortune has put her under a particularly intense microscope.

She’s a multi-millionaire movie star, and because of that, any man she’s seen with is also scrutinised. It can’t be easy trying to establish a new relationship and right now the world is gripped by her latest romance with 39-year-old actor Justin Theroux. The pair met when they filmed Wanderlust together at the end of last year, and have been dating since May.

Aniston though, is keeping her cards close to her chest. All she will say is the pretty vanilla “Yes, I’m very happy. I’m extremely lucky, and I’m extremely happy.”

You can’t blame her for trying to keep the affair under wraps; she even walked the red carpet alone at the recent LA premiere of Horrible Bosses, although the lovebirds were later seen partying at the legendary Chateau Marmont.

It seems that the California native is entering a new chapter of her life, and all signs point to the fact that star-studded Hollywood nights may be a thing of the past. Earlier this year, she put her breathtaking $42 million Beverly Hills estate on the market, and purchased a $5.9 million pad in Manhattan, close to Theroux.

Is there a reason for this new direction? “I grew up in New York,” she has said. “I miss it. There is nothing like being in the city that is just the city of Everyman. It’s all walks of life. I love that.”

And now that she’s found a new man, people are already speculating that she’s preparing for motherhood apparently her West Village pad has a nursery.

The actress, who is still grieving for her beloved dog and best friend Norman, who passed away in May, says, “I think people honestly just want to see me as a mum, and married and barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen. And I just want to say, `Everybody, relax! It’s going to happen.’ I’ll be singing from the mountaintop. Let me have the moment where I get to say, `Yes, in fact, I’m having a baby.’ As opposed to adopting from Mexico.”

Ever the professional, she bats away personal questions with a polite smile, but it’s clear that being probed for such personal information can be tiring. Is being famous the toughest job she’s ever had?

“Oh no. I think that was when I was 19, and a bike messenger in New York City”, she says laughing at the memory. Jason Bateman, her Horrible Bosses co-star, who is also in the room, murmurs under his breath, “That’s hot.” To which Aniston immediately replies, “You haven’t seen me riding a bike!”

She giggles at the memory. “I think on my worst day I drove into a wall or a door. I was very uncoordinated and klutzy. Really, I should not have been allowed near a bike, or at least not one with two cylinders.”

For most people, Aniston’s level of fame would be a burden but as she leaves, America’s Sweetheart flashes a smile and says, “You know, I don’t feel boxed in at all.”

- Horrible Bosses opens in Adelaide on August 25.

Speaking about the x-rated dialogue in scenes with It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s Charlie Day, she said: “I was just having fun. I was just able to have total freedom to be as insane as I wanted to be. The dialogue is brilliant…shockingly so.”

Watch Jennifer Aniston’s full RTÉ TEN interview here.

We asked her if it the dialogue that first attracted her to the role: “It was the dialogue, the whole circuit, the situation, the circumstance, the scenario, everything, I just loved it.”

When asked if we had a little taster of Aniston’s nympho dentist Dr Julia in her 30 Rock guest appearance as Claire Harper, she said: “Ah yes, there was a little bit of the woman unhinged, she was great.”

Aniston also spoke to RTÉ TEN about Colin Farrell, her love of Mad Men and what type of character she would like to play on the show.

The Emmy and Golden Globe winning actress also spoke about working in Ireland to film 2007′s Marley & Me: “I loved it. We weren’t there long enough – it was so beautiful.”

She said her fondest memoires were: “My first Guinness” which she said tasted like bark or “maybe thicker than that. It tasted like a root of some sort and the earth. It was a hearty, hardy drink.

“And we were all in a pub, the whole cast and crew and it was a very fun evening.”
